The Cross of St. Peter or Petrine Cross is an inverted Latin cross. Traditionally this was viewed as a Christian symbol, but in recent times it has also been used as a symbol of opposition to religion. The origin of the christian use of the symbol comes from the Catholic tradition that Simon Peter was crucified upside down, as told by Origen of Alexandria. The Ethiopian Christians also use an inverted cross.
By inverting the primary symbol of Christianity, the upside-down cross has become popular with atheists, anti-religion groups, and Satanists. According to this point of view it represents to some a reclaiming of personal power and identity from the religious authorities - and by extension oppressive political regimes and societal control in general. It is also a recurring motif in punk rock, black metal, and heavy metal, where it is embraced as symbol of anti-authoritarianism and defiance.
You hold the power in your hands to use this symbol however you wish. It is YOUR choice which charges it with meaning.
